19 Days North Cycling Adventure | Day 7

Day 7

Woke up in morning, a new day began. The sunlight pierces into the tent and make the air a little smother. However my feet were still icy. I moved myself a bit and realized the legs had lightly spasm. The cause should be the freezing night. Actually I tested the sleeping bag before departure, it passed so so outdoors in Germany. As it was now proved not suitable to weather condition here, I had to buy another one. There’s a sport shop nearby camping site. I picked one which can endure -3°C. It cost 111 EUR and weight heavier, but I have to compromise to ensure good sleep in coming trips.

I met a Netherlands couple at kitchen. They were taking a caravan tour here. The man said he sometimes cycle around in Netherlands, but never such a big plan as I’m doing after married. The woman laughed disdained: I respect our personal freedom even after marriage, if you had such plan, I would never stop you.  (Remarks 1)

I had booked the train ticket departure at the night of day 10, from Trondheim. The city is around 300 KM away – time schedule is not that tense, so let’s get on the road.

Since I reached the peak yesterday, I did doubt if way following would be a little boring. Indeed the landscape at mountain foot is no more that magnificent, yet with the river flows to east under cloudy sky, it has its own attraction. The river is so clean that looks like a pure jade glazing among valleys, the jade is even brighter than the green of the fields.

I was going to open a ‘outdoor food’ which was said to be designed for such trips. It needs some hot water and are with high caloric. I never doubt that the river here is drinkable, but a little hesitated where to set a fire. Yesterday the innkeeper explained, Norway has specified law treatment against outdoor fire to protect forest. Some people think it’s just about dig a hole and lit the fire, while it’s risky to burn the tree roots. Therefore people are only allowed to operate somewhere nearby water, for instance the fishers usually cook the fishes right nearby rivers. Even though it’s rainy recently, the air is still quite dry. If anyone lit the fire just along the road, the others will – she put a scream gesture. I knew my mini-stove is least dangerous, still I prepared another big pot of water as backup. In fact, until the water is totally boiled, the desktop under the stove is just a little warmed. This ‘outdoor food’ is just small pieces of dried vegetables and noodles. It tasted like fast food noodle, smelled not good. It cost me 9 EUR for one piece but not really made me ‘stuffed to death’ as a friend introduced.

I back to the bike after lunch. Remotely I saw 2 white dots and 1 black dot. When I got closer, it turned out to be 3 sheep. Sheep here run freely in the street, usually their reaction towards human beings are 3 steps: First, notice. Second, Analyze. Third, RUN! They started running when I was close enough. I enjoyed riding behind them, then there came the picture: 3 sheep running forward with their butt swinging left and right, I ‘chase’ at behind with a ‘small hill’ of luggage.

This is the first time I ride in the main road (or to say highway connecting towns and cities). Not like that we have bike lanes at city suburbs, here I have to share the same road with cars. I tried my best to keep myself at the very side, the drivers were mostly polite that even though they could drove by aside me, they actually took the lane of counter direction and then back to the lane with right light indication. I understand it as their respect to cyclists. Some roads and tunnels are clearly marked forbidden for bicycles, but there will be another small street aside specific for bikes. So after all I understand anywhere accessible by cars, it can be reached by bikes. I did get in wrong way once, after review the map and re-plan the route, when I finally got back to the right place after 20 KM in waste, I can’t help frowned – it’s another uphill road. The sign aside marked ‘Cautious, 8% gradient’. Of course I was no longer afraid by any uphill now. No word is necessary, just switch to lowest gear and fight.

The weather here is changeable. When a cloud shifts away, the strong sunlight will immediately burn my back. Soon I was again all wet by sweat. Yet if there’s any ‘skill’, in my opinion is just to focus in target and always proceed, never stop. In fact in that day, and in my coming trips afterwards, I only rest when I truly can’t proceed anymore. There was no regular meals. Just ride when I can, just eat when I had hunger.

Without being aware of it, the slope gradually turned flat. I looked forward, the vast extensive vision cheered me. Be able to soar downhill in such beautiful landscape, could there be any better rewards? So I farewell to the wide rider which accompanied me so far and reached town SEL at the other side of the mountain.

Perhaps it was because I haven’t been rest well for several days, or I wasted too much energy in wrong way (thanks heaven it’s also a steep hill), sense of tiredness stroke me even heavier. There was a river floating to north along the valley, I decide to follow it to find the next camping site, and set a full stop for today’s trip.

When I finally got to the camping site at 4 PM. I realized I was indeed out of strength to proceed to the original target which is 20 KM away. Rains dropped heavier again, considered these days are flexible, I choose to rest. This camping site is better than previous two. Nice position against river and hills, a wide lawn is free to set tents and caravans. WIFI Signal is good, delicate room for relax with a tidy kitchen. There is even mini-golf field beneath the cabins located at half-hill. However shower is additionally charged, every 5 minutes for 1.1 EUR. I can now operate my tent more and more skillfully. Made everything in order under strong tiredness and made my way into my little world.

Good night. I’ll try to make up today’s missing distance tomorrow.

Remarks 1:

Typical Chinese thoughts are: a couple should always stay together after married. Freedom should be sacrificed for family.
