19 DAYS NORTH CYCLING ADVENTURE | DAY 10

Day 10

I slept completely 10 hours, the first thing after I woke up is to shake my head – check if it’s super dizzy. And the answer was no – everything still in order: I survived! I tried to think back how did I come to such situation yesterday, and concluded it should be because of the coldness and insufficient supply. Despite the food here, especially those in supermarkets, are 8 to 10 times more expensive than in China, but could be less terrible when converting to Euro. I tried to overcome the nature of “Taurus”. (Remarks 1)

Cooked an instant noodle “Master Kang”(Remarks 2) as lunch and slept for another 2 hours, I set off on road and went explore to city center.

This city reminded me of Shanghai: Number 3 of population nation-wide, locate by mid of country. However if we ask how much population are there exactly, official number “160,000” is … just scary for Chinese.  (Remarks 3) So no wonder the scale of the downtown is a little disappointing for me. Actually the host reminded me before departure: ‘Where are you from? China? Oh, then it’s a super tiny downtown’. After all it’s really TOO small, as a big city here… it’s unbelievable that the downtown is just several blocks, it took only around 10-20 minutes for a bike tour around, is here really the 3rd largest city in Norway?

I ride on a small hill where the university locates. Before I take close look at the delicate old buildings, I was attracted by the view of the sea which is no more far away. When there’s sea in the picture, everything is different, which finally overrun the landscape in mountain area in my mind. I tried to pull the eyesight back to the front, if not for some students were sitting by the gate, I would never thought such magnificent building belongs to a college.

The downtown is especially beautiful under the blue sky. This seems to be a seagull city – flying in sky, stop at the peak of buildings, even stand still on the ground, they are everywhere, just much more seagulls than anywhere I’ve seen before. A dog of passerby try to get rid of the rope and pounce on them, the seagull just jump lightly away in elegant.

The landscape on the bridge of city center really shocked me. The shoal to the sea is in fascinating deep blue, houses with white wall and red roof stand there quietly next to the peak of the church, everything is so harmony embraced by hills and the river.

I made my step towards the sea, finally a wide mild blue came into sight. In that moment I throw the city scale and all previous landscape behind me and totally surrender myself to it. I always got a feeling that the more north I am, the more it shows an indescribable blue in the sky. Now they joint perfectly together at horizon far away above sea, it’s almost to tell a boarder to distinguish them.  Despite I see only a part of the sea, what I feel is dreamlike blue. Once again the word failed, even with the photos, it can’t describe a bit of the fresh feeling of standing in sea-wind breeze and face towards the sea.

Stayed long enough aside sea, I decided to find a restaurant to spend rest time until the train arrives shortly before midnight. I have heard that the deer meat is a perfect choice in Norway, unfortunately I visited 4-5 restaurants in city center (these are almost all the restaurant in the area) but could just in vain. I compromised at one with nice surroundings and picked a outdoor seat.  Despite it’s entirely bright in day light, the clock pointed almost at 20:00 PM. I was enjoying a quite expensive fish dish, suddenly felt uncomfortable again. The condition dropped in a moment and soon it was like the worst situation yesterday.  I asked for cups of hot water, tried to warm myself up, but just felt helplessly my hands on warm cup is getting cold rapidly, felt, so-damn-weak in no time.  People sit around me were still talking and laughing. The daylight just went dim for a little bit, I even felt hard to stand against wind, then have to stand up quickly and made my way to supermarket as planned.  Hurriedly I walked weakly in small steps into the supermarket nearby, time to time just see all black before me. Stood before the rack I almost knee down with hardly any support from legs. The cold sweat permeated in my hands, inside of me I blamed me furiously: Just had a perfect rest and good foods, where comes such weakness? There are new challenges tomorrow!

I wrapped myself tightly and reluctantly took the bike to the right platform, the conditions seems to grew a little better, while I was thinking hatefully about reschedule, if I really cannot make it tomorrow. In dusk light came the train on time, 23:30 PM, I jumped on it and soaked myself in the seat.

Thanks heaven its much better now comparing with in supermarket just now. I studied Norway railway NSB for a bit and found it apparently out of my expectation: Clean, plenty space, power supply under every seats. There were packages placing on all seats, which provides carpet, eye-patch, air-pump pillow, ear stuck. What’s more important: free WIFI!

The Menu in seat pocket were as delicate as in first class restaurants, the manuals of NSB also stand by, where introduced people can reserve Families tickets, so as to allow children to play in ‘Children carriage’ where offers toys, children books and snacks. Beside of that, we have carriages for bikes and other bulky luggage, even a carriage for pets (in cages).

When the train set off, I didn’t went asleep immediately. The scenery outside the window appears different. Suddenly I realized, what I see in window asides – east and west, are totally different. In west its the last beam of sunset, shining a dark red and golden upon the sea, while in east there hang a bright moon over the deep blue nightfall. I’ve seen the sun and the moon both set in sky, but such contrast is what I never seen before.

Remarks 1:

Taurus – In China it’s quite common to discuss about the constellation and the characteristic. Usually people says one feature of Taurus is like ‘Saving Money’.

Remarks 2:

‘Master Kang’ – A Taiwan brand of instant noodle which was well known to all in China. Especially popular in 90s-00s’, cheap (around 0.4 EUR), convenient, delicious make it once welcomed everywhere.

Remarks 3:

Population – ‘160,000’ population is less than in a county in China. Despite something in common with Trondheim and Shanghai, the latter runs over the former by around 144 times.

Living in Europe makes me understand China government more as it is indeed a huge challenge to manage and try to develop this huge nation. After all, at least in big cities, life nowadays is not bad.
