Hello all, I am looking at doing a cycling trip April next near for 4-6 months. I am a solo female and have travelled a lot and love cycling but not done anything like this before. I am trying to work out which country/countries would be best to do my first trip. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated :)

Hi Charlie,

I went on a trip across Spain, Italy, France, UK, Holland, Belgium and other European countries a few years back. Started off as a small mixed group (3 of us).  2 of them went off for work reasons, so I completed about a month or so by myself. This was mainly in France, Belgium and a little bit of Switzerland.

Loved the trip and being by myself was liberating after travelling as a group. You go and do what you want, when you want. The being by myself wasn't an issue. As it was summer time, many more camp sites were open and busy with tourists. This meant I was around families, etc.. which I felt safe with.

Cycle touring is no different to other travelling. Trust your gut feeling. If it doesn't feel right, leave. Just do the obvious things and avoid being by yourself at night in places you don't like the look of. Be mindful, but don't let it take over you and ruin your enjoyment of the trip.

If you haven't done touring before, maybe do some shorted trips near to home to get a feel for it and the kit you want to use. As for where to go, I have only really toured in Europe myself. I dream of touring Vietnam and countries in that part of the world.

Hope you have fun! Once you start cycle touring, you won't want to stop :-)

Jo

I have seen solo female riders around Europe, the USA and Canada. Though the dollar may be too strong now, Alaska, Yukon, NW Territory and south through BC and Alberta offer great back roads, wild country and great riding. Hope for a dry summer, for with rain come the biting bugs. FYI, this is a camping focused trip. cheers, pete
