19 Days North Cycling Adventure | Day 9
Only 110 KM left to Trondheim city. I checked online and recognized joyfully that basically its just downhills. Should be a smooth trip.
I lifted the gate of my tent in morning. Out there was still raining mildly. I had to put on my raincoat. Then I realized I made a huge mistake yesterday: I stuffed it into bag without drying it, now it is still completely wet! The inside of the coat is wet of my yesterday’s sweat, outside is wet by the rains. To put it on my dried body is just COOL. So cool that even now I can feel of it. Besides, this day turned to be extremely cold. The wind found its way under my clothes easily, I was for the first time so freeze that I have to make one hand free to wrap myself during cycling. Now downhills is not lovely anymore. The faster, the colder. I even began to wish for a uphills so that I can warm up myself. But it is just downhills – like I predicted in the tent.
No idea how long it went under rains and wind, finally it came slowly to end. I took off the raincoat immediately and tied it at the backside of my bike for drying. It was so chilled to take off clothes in this weather and my inner T-shirt is again all wet by sweat.. I tried to put on another coat but realized it was also wet – same mistake, hardly find a chance to dry it. So far, there was not even one piece of dry clothes on me or in my bag. Holy sh!t. I just throw the coat aside and do it just with a T-shirt in this freezing wind. Just when I was about to used to the temperature, it poured out raining again. I have to put on the raincoat again, which is hardly dried.
The weather never ceased to swap itself with the clouds shift in the sky, as if it really enjoy toying with me. I was kind of exhausted after several rounds – trapped in hunger and coldness. On realized I haven’t take in something warm for several meals, for first time I stopped at 12:00 for rest. I pass by a camping site, asked the staff if I could use their kitchen. He generously allowed that, as well as other necessary things free. Unfortunately, the second ‘outdoor food’ and a piece of chocolate they sold for 5 EUR did not really make me feel better.
So I cycled in such ‘half-dead’ way in afternoon. There are few uphills near Trondheim, where I apparently found myself out of energy. I checked the bike computer – no wonder for that, it have been 7 hours riding, over 100+KM today. And I’m already almost crushed by the weather.
Luckily, I had booked an Airbnb lodging here. The owner was not returned. I wobbled into a supermarket nearby for ‘personal Menu’ again.
This time it’s completely helpless. I chilled badly when walking out. Supporting by the last piece of energy, I tried to search for somewhere to rest in the community, and finally experienced the helpless and panic, of a sinking boat trying to find a shelter in storms.
It’s for the first time I feel myself can no more stand against the challenge.
In desperate I asked several passerby where can I find a restaurant, and finally found the only one which is still in business. I ordered a tee and pizza, lose my neck and collapsed at the sofa. I sent a message to my family with cell phone: ‘I’m almost doomed, have found a place to rest’. I never say this word easily. I guess I was really at the last limitation.
Understand nothing in the menu, the pizza I ordered randomly surprisingly content my favorite pepper, under double incitement of chill and warm food. I went out to my bike and took a pair of dry socks (these are the last dry-things with me now), not much later I felt a warmth came up from the bottom of my feet, when I walked out of the room again, the wind seems no more that hard to endure.
This 5-rooms-apartment is shared by 4 people, the last room is for short rent. The community around seems to be students dorm, but the decoration indoor is just delicate. The hostess provided the offer but did not smile much, while her boyfriend showed more hospitality, walking with crutches and show me around the apartment. Once again I thought about somebody once commented ‘Norway people are quite cold’, all way long I did feel them colder than Germans, but as a Chinese who had experienced all kinds of diversity people in his homeland, surely this ‘cold’ is nothing in comparison.
The host said his lame leg was caused by motorcycle accident. It reminded me that half year ago, a younger at Germany Airbnb showed me his result of such accident: half finger gone. That’s the price of pursuing speed. Even for racing bike, I know it’s possible to reach speed over 60 KM/H, when man fall down, it’s either serious hurt or die. So usually these cyclist are always equipped with helms. However, in comparison, some old people or women in Germany, even with speed around 10+ KM/H, cycling with mini wheels in city, still wear their helms tightly and smiling, that’s really funny in comparison.
Get back to theme.
I took a good shower at the lodging, throw all clothes, except those on body, into the laundry machine. Now everything turned much better. Forget about the amusement plan tomorrow which I earned by squeezing these days, just take good rest in bed.
I was quite worried before closing my eyes. I was not sure if I could stand up on the next day.
I don’t want to fall down here.
